CHAPTER FOURTEEN

THE NEXT COUPLE OF WEEKS were some of the best of Jace’s life. Or at least, they would have been if not for another formally worded, increasingly aggressive letter from the bank. As he had been doing for months now, he mailed off a check for every penny he could spare, with the full expectation that it would be returned to him un-cashed, along with a snippy note about his payment needing to be for the full amount before the bank could accept it.

Aside from that, however, things were good. Really good. It seemed as though, now that he’d finally let it see the light of day, his sex drive was attempting to make up for lost time. Almost every evening was spent exploring some new kink, some new aspect of lust as Remy slowly shattered his control into glittering shards of pleasure.

Except for a single night spent in the horse barn, nursing the roan colt through a bout of colic, Jace slept in Remy’s bed every night. Gradually, more and more of his belongings migrated to the luxurious suite of rooms in the ranch house, until his cabin became more of a storage unit than an actual living space.

For this reason, it was a bit of a surprise when Jace wandered in on a Thursday night after a final check of a filly who’d had some swelling in her fetlock after being worked that afternoon, to find Remy sitting at his desk, staring at his laptop screen with a morose expression.

“I’m afraid I need a night to myself,” Remy said. “Would you mind sleeping in your cabin tonight?”

It was a reasonable enough request, but that didn’t stop the spike of unease in Jace’s lungs. “Yeah, okay,” he replied, trying to play it cool. “Problem?”

Remy closed the window on his laptop and rose, crossing to where Jace was standing, somewhat awkwardly, near the door. He drew Jace forward and kissed him softly. His lips tasted of expensive bourbon.

“Not with you,” said Remy, “and not with us. I just need tonight to deal with my own fucked-up shit. I promise that if you and I ever have a problem, you’ll know about it. I won’t keep you in the dark. Come back tomorrow night, Jace. Everything will be back to normal. Just give me tonight.”

“Sure, if that’s what you want,” Jace said, hiding his misgivings.

Remy quirked half of a smile, though it didn’t reach his eyes. “Thanks. Do you need to get anything for tomorrow morning?”

Jace collected his toothbrush and razor before wandering back to his lonely cabin, trying not to read too much into Remy’s behavior. It was funny how empty the tiny bunk felt, after a lifetime of sleeping alone and only a couple of weeks sleeping with Remy curled up next to him.

In the morning, Remy emerged with the brim of his hat pulled down over red-rimmed eyes, obviously hung-over as hell. Jace tried to ignore the slight churning of his stomach and focus on the day’s tasks.
