Talking about Joâs failing marriage was a weird subject for Ali. She could tell that she wasnât happy, but what was she supposed to do? She felt weird saying anything other than âdo what makes you happyâ or âfollow your heartâ. She felt like if she spoke out, telling Jo to just go ahead and divorce her wife, she was overstepping her boundaries as an ex and as a professional.
So far, she had managed to keep things professional between the two of them, but it was getting harder. She was staying later and later each night, talking with Jo until she felt comfortable enough to go to sleep. She looked forward to hearing her voice, to seeing her face each morning when she clocked into work. It had changed how Ali viewed going to work entirely.
She had clocked out of work about an hour ago, and now she was sitting by Joâs bedside. âI think I need a vacation after all of this,â Jo said, leaning back in bed. On her TV screen, an advertisement for a seaside resort was playing. âI never really took vacations before, but I think after this I deserve one.â
Vacation felt like such a foreign word to Ali. She was trying her best to save up to take Scarlett somewhere nice next summer, but her savings were slim. If they did travel, it was usually a day trip to another city. She wanted to give Scarlett that kind of childhood experience, but money was tight on her salary. Glancing up at the TV, Ali laughed. âI canât remember the last time I took a vacation.â
Jo turned to look at her, eyebrows knitted together in confusion. âDonât you get vacation time?â
âI do. I just⦠donât get a chance to use it.â The last thing Ali wanted to do was to mention her financial situation. She didnât want it to seem like she was trying to get Jo to pity her. She definitely didnât want it to seem like she was asking for handouts.
Joâs gaze stayed on her; eyebrows wrinkled in the center. She looked at Ali like she didnât believe her, but she wasnât going to push it. From the far-away look in Joâs eyes, Ali could see the wheels were turning. Just before she could push her about what it was, she spoke again. âYou should come with me then. You and Scarlett?â She paused, making sure she got Scarlettâs name right.
Ali was taken aback. She was sure her eyes were wide; she was sure she looked comical. âExcuse me?â
âNot like that.â Jo laughed it off quickly. Quickly enough that it left Ali feeling a little⦠hurt. Like the idea of them going away together was silly. She knew it was. They barely had a tentative friendship now, but knowing that didnât change how Ali felt. âYou deserve a vacation, I need one. We get along well enough that it could work, right?â
Ali didnât know what to say. Her silence made Jo reach out from her bed, taking Aliâs hand in her own.
