Chapter 17
EVEE
Eveeâs mind raced at everything that had just happened in the tent. All this time, sheâd been so certain that if she and Justin could just make it to sunrise, theyâd be free to go back home. But that had never been an option, not once. There was no escaping this hell, no matter what.
Dionys and Kennedy vowed to do whatever they could to protect the unclaimed Founts, which thankfully only now included Justin, Maria, and Bruce. Bruce at least had Freya looking out for him, protecting him in case the cartel decided to fight for what they were promised. Evee wanted to trust that Justin would be safe with her Fae friends, but things didnât look good. If they didnât succeed against Sin, not only would Evee be trapped in a life of misery, but Brooke would die and Liam would be so broken over her death that he wouldnât be someone to rely on in a fight against his own people.
Everything seemed so hopeless all of a sudden, so futile, the walls of fate closing in on her and compressing her being into a small ball of insignificance. Her muscles squeezed around her chest, making it difficult to breathe, and she hardly noticed Dionys and Kennedy returning to the table.
A voice broke through the deafness of solitude sheâd dissolved into, and she became aware of a gentle touch on her arm. She blinked back to the present to see Justin stretching his arm across the table to lightly caress her arm. His hazel eyes were shimmering with concern.
âYou okay?â he asked softly, his brows creasing.
She swallowed and nodded, allowing her eyes to linger on him for a moment after he turned his attention to Dionys, who had started talking, but Evee didnât hear any of it. She was lost in appreciating the stubble that lined Justinâs angular jaw and framed his soft, full lips. The wide, muscular shoulders and strong arms that offered so much comfort whenever they wound around her. And the look of passionate determination in his eyes as he listened keenly to Dionysâs words.
He was the most handsome, wonderful man she could ever imagine existing, and sheâd loved him since the day she met him freshman year. Securing his safety was the only thing that mattered right now. Not her fate, not her freedom or happiness. Just him.
A rage so powerful it burned in every muscle as it spread throughout her body crushed the gloom that had tried to weaken her, and a new resolve fortified with steely strength within her soul.
She might be doomed to this world of monsters and magical bastards, but she would be damned if she let it take Justin, too. He didnât belong here, and he deserved every happiness the universe could offer and more. It was time to stop feeling like a whiny little bitch moping about her shitty circumstances and fight for what was important to her. After all, she wasnât Henryâs voiceless, spineless punching bag anymore.
