Captain Poole was right; the ship sailed at first light, Santorini having a deep harbour and Mediterranean tides almost irrelevant in any case. Lapwing picked her up at the three mile limit and begged her to heave to, all very polite, sent a boarding party across. Captain Atkinson reported to Frederick two hours later.

“As you suspected, sir. She is carrying supplies of war for the Greeks. Her master was entirely open with us, knowing that we are sympathetic to the cause. It seems, sir, that the sinking of the Turk by Levant was seen by a pair of caiques, who made haste to spread the news to every Greek they could come across. The Turk had razed a rebel island, had looted everything they possessed, and was on her way to do more of the same. The squadron are viewed as heroes by the Greeks as a result of Levant’s action. The two gentlemen aboard, both from London and claiming some degree of influence in political quarters, are very pleased with you, Sir Frederick. They said that they would be delighted to spread the word of your noble action; London will certainly applaud you, they said.”

The Admiralty was more likely to hang him, Frederick thought.

“How delightful. I presume you sent her on her way, Captain Atkinson?”

“She is to make a rendezvous tomorrow, it seems, to deliver her cargo, having arranged that here, and will then make haste away from Turkish waters, sir. Five or six weeks should take them home again, they told me.”

Frederick smiled, and quietly hoped that they might run into an irate and well-armed Turk in the next few hours.

“If they survive to reach London, then I must imagine that my recall will be sent a very few days later. Not to worry – we will deal with that event when it occurs.”
