Chapter Fourteen

Quin fumbled with the key, turning it right and then left and then right again. It appeared stuck. The inside of the lock was possibly rusted with age despite it being used by Tottie Williams for the last gazillion years. Wyn wished the woman well. Apparently, the retirement village her grandson was sending her to had a swimming pool, and she was to participate in hydrotherapy. It sounded fun and relaxing, something Wyn could do with right now.

“Sorry,” muttered Quin. “I’m not sure why the key isn’t working. It’s as if something is jamming it.”

Wyn smiled and tried hard to hide her disappointment. When Quin had mentioned a special surprise, Wyn hadn’t expected to be escorted to the lake house she so badly wanted to get rid of.

“Maybe just pull the key out a little bit and try it again,” offered Wyn, although she had no idea if it would work. Apart from that last visit to the house, where Quin had kissed her right before dear Tottie had threatened them with calls to the police, she hadn’t been back. This was the first time that Wyn had stood at the front door of her own lake house.

Funny. She had hoped to avoid the house entirely. Wyn had hoped that Steven and Tracy would take it off her hands. Unfortunately, the two had rescheduled their visit until tomorrow.

“I think you’re pushing it in too deep.” She reached out, grabbed hold of Quin’s hand, noticed how cold it was, and then tugged the key back before she rotated it to the right.

There was a click, and then the door swung open just as a musty smell hit Wyn right in the nose. Oh goodness. What a tragic date. She wondered if she should pop Quin’s bubble and suggest they go somewhere else. Maybe they could go somewhere warm, and cozy, and a little less gross.

But she only had to glance in Quin’s direction, at her nervous smile and at her somewhat jittery posture to realize that she wouldn’t dare say anything.

After all, it was the thought that counted.

“Ladies first,” gestured Quin. “And don’t worry, the heat still works and there’s a fireplace. I’ll get it started as soon as we get settled.”

Wyn nodded and stepped into a hallway that looked to be frozen in time. Wallpaper with a faded collage of sunflowers was peeling at the very top of the wall, right beneath the ceiling with two large suspicious stains. Water damage potentially. The runner, which was stretched across the floor, had gaps missing, eaten by what could only be moths or possibly tiny mice. Frameless black and white photos of men and women and children were tacked onto the walls, and at the end of the hallway was a mirror with a crack right down its length. It was like walking into a haunted house. Every part of her was screaming, ‘Turn around. Get out of here’. But then Quin slipped her hand into Wyn’s. The feeling was warm compared to the cold in the air.
