“I was on the computer and someone tried to hack in or something,” Kate blabbered frantically. “All I could think of were the flames that burned through the webcam image of me on my work computer last month.”

Tom’s arms slid around her, solid and reassuring. “You’re okay,” he murmured, sounding as if he was saying it as much for his own peace of mind as hers.

She leaned into his comfort, momentarily forgetting the pretense that had thrust her into his arms. He was so protective and sweet. And anyone with two eyes could see he really cared about her. If only she could trust him not to take the plants away, she’d tell him everything. She’d feel a lot better confiding in him. But she couldn’t. Because her well-being was more important to him than reuniting her with her father.

She pressed her palm to his chest to put some distance between them as her mind raced for a way to get herself out of this mess. Tom’s heart pulsed rapidly against her fingers, betraying the depth of his concern.

Feeling utterly unworthy of it, she ducked her head.

He clasped her hand and tugged her toward the laptop. “Show me what happened.”

She bit her lip, swiped at the dirt she tasted there, and quickly brushed it off her clothes and Tom’s shirt. Okay, admitting to still searching the internet for more information on amendoso was a lot safer than telling him about the plants in her basement. Maybe his computer forensics guy could even track down who’d deleted the sites. Site. She couldn’t tell him about Patti’s father. Not yet. She sucked her lip between her teeth once more, wavering over maybe at least telling him that much.

“Kate?”

Tom sat in front of the laptop, staring at the innocuous no-such-website-exists message. The Trojan alert had long since slipped from the bottom corner of the screen.

She explained what happened, and to her surprise, Tom didn’t give her a hard time about trying to revisit the blog. He searched her virus reports, his brow furrowing deeper with every click of the mouse.

“What’s wrong?” If someone from GPC had hacked into her computer and scanned her hard drive, they’d know she knew about the plant. She’d always assumed it, but that didn’t stop the panic from suddenly welling into her throat. “Patti’s poisoning and my near drowning weren’t accidents, were they? Crump must be working for—”

“Take it easy.” Tom spun the office chair to face her and caught her hand. “One of the reasons I called was to let you know that Serena admitted to jabbing the car tire.”

“She did?”

“Yes, and from the blowup I overheard between the two of them, I doubt Jarrett conspired to get her to do it.”

“Jarrett’s in town?” Her voice edged even higher. “He’s supposed to be in Toronto.”

“He said he blew off his meeting after Patti’s call,” Tom said, but his clenched jaw said he didn’t know what to think.

“Jarrett saw the sketch I doctored,” Kate reminded him.

“I know. Do
