I roll my eyes as the doorbell rings repeatedly, and only one person can annoy me endlessly without actually annoying me.

“Yeah, yeah. I’m coming,” I say, and an amused chuckle escapes my throat, and I mutter under my breath, “That’s what she said.”

I open the door and look at the smug face of my best friend. “You know, you don’t need to ring my doorbell so incessantly.”

“I know. But I know how much you love it when I do,” Bonny grins as she scoots past me, and I close the front door.

“Yeah, right,” I mumble.

“I just wanted to check if you’re okay.”

“Why wouldn’t I be?”

“You haven’t answered any of my messages today. I thought you might have been kidnapped or something.”

“Really?” I ask, walking to my phone.

It’s plugged into my charger, but I notice it hadn’t been plugged in as I pull on the cord.

“Oh, shit,” I mutter as I hold the unplugged cord in the air for her to see.

“Oops.”

“Oops? You could have been murdered for all I knew.”

“I’m sorry. I guess I’m just a little distracted today.”

My mind has been in a flurry since my dinner with Ryder. It’s hard not to be distracted by all these new emotions swirling around within me. And the worst part is I’m not allowed to talk about it. But obviously, Bonny doesn’t count. She’s my best friend, and she’s not just anyone. I trust her and know she won’t run her mouth on anything I say.

“Only a little?” she asks. “Because you look like you’re carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders.

“I’m okay. I swear.”

More than okay, to be honest.

I look at her and see the apprehensive expression on her face, and I sigh.

“What?”

“There’s something you aren’t telling me, right?”

How does she know?

“What have you heard?” I ask and cross my arms.

“I haven’t heard anything. I just have this intuition when it comes to my best friend. That you were out with a guy the other night on a date, and you failed to mention anything about it to me.”

I roll my eyes and shake my head. “It’s not a big deal.”

“Where’d you meet him?” she asks, wiggling her eyebrows.

I let out a sigh, knowing that I’ll have to tell her sooner or later. “It’s Ryder.”

“What?” she asks me in disbelief. “Are you serious?”

“I am.”

“How did that happen? Doesn’t the company have rules about employees and-”

“It does, but he made me promise not to tell anyone,” I say with a cringe.

She narrows her eyes at me and asks, “How long has this been going on?”

“For a few weeks.”

“Tessa…”

“I know,” I say and throw my hands up. “I should have told you.”

“You do know what will happen when people find out, right?” Bonny asks. “He’s a billionaire, and the paparazzi have been dying to get dirt on him for a while now. He’s the most private person the city has ever known. He doesn’t do interviews, and he doesn’t share his private life with the world.”

“You know an awful lot about him, it seems,” I say with a frown.
