Chapter Eight

“I put those boxes Spencer dropped off the other day in your bedroom,” Kyle said as they climbed the stairs to the apartment.

“Thanks,” Piper replied.

Kyle unlocked the door and stood aside to let her pass. “It seems strange somehow without April around,” he said.

“Is this the first time she’s spent the night away from home?” she asked, trying not to feel disappointed that he hadn’t carried her across the threshold.

“No.” He followed her inside, shrugged out of his tuxedo jacket, and tossed it over the back of the easy chair. “She’s stayed overnight with Vera a few times, more often than not because I’d been called out on an emergency,” he explained as he pulled the burgundy silk tie free of his shirt collar and began to undo the buttons.

“Are you worried she’ll decide she doesn’t want to stay at Sabrina’s after all?” Piper asked. She glanced over at Kyle and felt her mouth go dry. He was frowning as he wrestled with the buttons on the sleeve of his shirt. Her gaze was inexorably drawn to his tanned chest peeking from beneath the open shirt.

She’d seen a man’s naked chest before, but for reasons she couldn’t begin to fathom, the sight of Kyle’s bronzed and powerful muscles sent her senses reeling.

“No, she’ll be fine,” he said, continuing to struggle with the buttons. “These damned things,” he mumbled with obvious frustration.

“Here. Let me,” Piper offered. Setting down her bouquet, she moved in front of him. He held out his hands. With deft fingers she undid first one sleeve button then the other.

“There.” She lifted her head to meet his gaze and suddenly the air between them was sizzling with tension. His eyes, turning to molten silver, bore into hers as if searching for something.

Mesmerized, she watched the tip of his tongue appear to moisten his lips. An ache, strong and sweet, spiraled through her, and for a mind-numbing moment she thought he was going to kiss her.

She waited breathlessly for his mouth to claim hers, while her heart hammered so loudly she was sure he could hear it.

Suddenly he cursed softly, shattering the moment. He turned away but not before she’d glimpsed a look of anger clouding his features. He raked a hand through his hair, sending a flurry of white confetti to the floor.

“You’d better put those flowers in water,” he said gruffly. “You’ll find a vase in one of the kitchen cupboards. Excuse me, I’ll be right back.” Grabbing the tuxedo jacket from the chair, he strode down the hall toward his bedroom.

Piper stood frozen like a mannequin in a store window waiting for her heartbeat to return to normal. She drew a steadying breath telling herself she was a fool, that he’d no more been about to kiss her than fly to the moon.

Clamping down on the tears threatening to spill, she retrieved her bouquet and walked into the kitchen. After checking several cupboards she found a vase and filled it with water. She set her bouquet in the center of the table.
