NINETEEN

IMOGEN

He was twenty minutes late.

I glanced around Ruby’s diner, trying not to appear as uncomfortable as I felt sitting on my own in a packed restaurant, waiting for what was clearly meant to be a date.

When I’d finally agreed to go out with Bant, he’d let me choose the place and I’d picked Ruby’s because, even if the date was bad, at least I’d get a decent burger out of it.

Only… I knew the date wasn’t going to be bad.

The sex between us was more phenomenal than I’d ever admit to his face, and Bant and I had never had a problem with conversation before, even if in the past it had been fuelled by a complete disdain for each other. Things had changed between us after he turned up on my doorstep drunk and as difficult as it was for me to admit it, I liked this new version of us.

I liked him. Which was why I’d finally agreed to go to dinner with him.

And now… he wasn’t here.

I shoved aside that ugly little voice inside me that said I never should have trusted him in the first place and checked my phone for the fifth time, trying not to look like I’d been stood up.

Nothing.

“Not often I see you sitting all alone…” came a voice from beside me, and I glanced up, hiding my phone beneath the table.

Of course Jackson was here right now, because that’s just what I needed.

“I’m waiting for someone,” I said, trying to sound as casual as I could muster with shame coursing through me.

“It looks like they might have stood you up.” A slow smile spread across his face. “I’d never stand you up.”

I reached for my soda, taking a sip and forcing myself to smile back at him.

“I’m sure.” I waved my phone at him. “But they just sent me a text to say they’re on their way.”

A blatant lie. My phone was quieter than the library during finals.

Someone called Jackson’s name from across the diner and he turned his head to nod, before glancing back at me. “My offer of a date is still on the table, and I’ll actually show up.”

He knocked his knuckle against the tabletop then sauntered back to his friends.

My jaw clenched.

Damn it, Bant.

Where the hell are you?

My better judgment had told me to stay away from him, to stay away from all guys because none of them could be trusted. College boys told you what you wanted to hear to get you into bed with them—or in this case, agree to a date with him— and then ghosted you without so much as an ‘I’m sorry’ Snap. All the warning signs had been there, and I’d brushed them aside and opened myself up to heartbreak and humiliation again. Surely that made me the biggest fool on campus.

How had I let myself get sucked in by a hot mouth, a sweet smile, and tight set of abs?

I was better than this. I knew better than this.

My phone lit up on the table and I snatched it up, unlocking it.
