8. The Beijing opera masks for Li Tingzhi, a heroic Song general, and Bayan, Qubilai’s greatest field marshal. Opera was a popular diversion during the Yuan period and was often used as a vehicle for subversive political commentary of Mongol rule.

9. Song infantry were supplied with the very best in technology and whilst the repeating crossbow had only a limited range it could lay down a rapid rate of fire and was of enormous value in the defence of fortified places.

10. Mass production of crossbows was one of the Song state’s major achievements. The huge expansion of the army that took place during Song’s long war with the Mongols required an easily reproducible model to supply the new infantry forces, though specialist long-range weapons for snipers were also produced.
