“He came at the wrong time,” I blurt drying the tears I shed. “The hormones are just making me think and act stupidly.”

“What he needs is someone to set him straight.” Ainsley is walking from one end of the living room to the other. “I swear to God, when I meet him I’m going to . . . I don’t know what I’m going to do, but he has to stop being a brat. That’s what he is.”

“He’s hurt,” I remind her, his friend Ethan told us everything about the Callaways. How they’ve always been demanding. Asking Tucker to be perfect, and ever since Tucker found out he’s adopted, he has felt the need to do everything in his power to be that boy. He was scared they’d push him away, and his fears came true. “His parents have been treating him like trash for the past couple of years. If I had known . . . but how could I know. Fuck!”

“Language,” Pria, who is nursing Lilly, whispers. “Even when you don’t know that you’re adopted, you feel it. Something pushes you to become what you think your parents want from you. There’s a fear lingering in your heart as if you’re missing a connection with them and you need to compensate for it. I’m thankful that my mother gave me up to the Walkers. They were crazy, but loved me. If they hadn’t, I might’ve hated my mother.”

“You think he hates me?” I sob because coming to Pria for advice isn’t helping me.

“He blames you for his shitty life, that’s for sure,” she suggests. “He’s a sixteen-year-old boy, who went through a traumatic experience and a lot of emotional abuse. You came just in time to be his scapegoat.”

Ainse looks at the ceiling and then back at me. “She’s right. To fix it, we need to smother him with love and wait.”

Ah, the old Decker recipe. “I don’t have time for that. Soon we’re going to meet with the Callaways. What if Tucker prefers to go with them and suffer than stay here?”

“Why are you meeting them?”

“Tristan and his lawyer want us to start some legal action against them, recover Tucker,” I explain to them. “The temporary custody is valid only for a few days. After listening to Ethan’s story, Tristan is adamant to keep them both safe, with us. I do want to keep Tucker, but not against his will.”

“It’s going to take us more than a couple of days to convince him that he’s ours.” Ainse’s words make me anxious. “But we can do it. Matt’s plan to pester individually is genius. Let us start, and you can continue being that amazing mother I know that you are. Porter and Mac want him to go over to the farm to help them. Porter thinks he can get through to him. We aren’t going to lose him.”

“We won’t. You’re right. He’s ours.”

Porter, Ainse and Mason are teaming up with us because Tucker reminds them of James. A baby Porter and Ainse conceived, but Mason loved as if the baby was his.
