October 1998

Tatiana hadn’t slept at all last night, and as a result, this morning her head was groggy and her eyes red and scratchy. She’d barely said two words to Franklin as she’d driven him to school, and after he jumped from the car and ran to greet his classmates, she’d driven home with tears streaming down her cheeks.

She’d come to care for Allison over the past few months. While she could have been jealous of the woman, she’d found herself wanting to mother and protect her. She’d watched the local news off and on throughout the night, but there’d been no report of a vehicle going off the Golden Gate Bridge. She vacillated between hoping one had and praying one hadn’t.

She poured herself a cup of coffee, her fourth that morning, then wandered into the sunroom to stare out the window. The leaves on the trees were transitioning into beautiful autumn shades, and while this had always been her favorite time of year, she wasn’t sure she’d ever look at the season in quite the same way.

With her nerves frazzled, she jumped when the house phone rang. The cup of hot coffee dropped from her hands and smashed on the tile floor. Ignoring the splattered mess, she rushed back to the kitchen. As she reached for the receiver, the ringing stopped, and the answering machine picked up.

The voice was as soft as a breeze. “Thanks for everything, Tatiana. Be well.”

“Goddamn it!” she cursed, scrambling to press the call intercept button. With a click, the message ended. Fresh tears sprang to her eyes, and her shoulders shook with a deep sadness.

“That bastard!” she cried. “If it takes the rest of my life, I’ll make him suffer for this.”
