I did know someÂone who had met him.
AlÂthough he supÂposÂedly never did anyÂthing useÂful, JuÂvenÂtus was the memÂber of the SecÂond CoÂhort who arÂrived early at the ofÂfice. The rest of the day shift were still buyÂing their breakÂfasts in streets nearby. It was their cusÂtom not to hurry. Never beÂing party to their heated disÂcusÂsions about why the Greens were crap and the short-arse Reds should all be sent to the silÂver mines, JuÂvenÂtus turned up at their staÂtion-house on his own.
I was still passÂing the time of day with their night-shift clerk. My mind was not fully on pleasÂantries. It had given me a jar to come back through the Horti LamiÂani to the SecÂondâs base. On the way I had passed the blackÂened pyre. EvÂeryÂone conÂnected with the fuÂneral had now disÂpersed. Ashes of Old RaÂbirÂius and ClauÂdia Deiana must have been colÂlected, but scents of burnÂing hung around. GarÂdenÂers were beÂginÂning reÂinÂstateÂment tasks. They were reÂplantÂing shrubs among white canÂdeÂlabra, gorÂgeous great marÂble things that had ivy carved on them. When I enÂquired, these workÂers conÂfirmed that a small famÂily group had been to colÂlect what was left of Old RaÂbirÂius and, unÂknown to them, ClauÂdia Deiana. So she had gone to eterÂnal rest inÂterÂminÂgled with the King of Kings. I hoped it would be more peaceÂful than her life with FloÂrius.
At the barÂracks, even JuÂvenÂtus could tell how my walk through the garÂdens had afÂfected me. With an inÂnoÂcent lack of guile, he tried to cheer me up. He was unÂexÂpectÂedly helpÂful. I was the first perÂson who had ever asked him to look through his many noteÂbooks. His record of what he had overÂheard or perÂsuaded peoÂple to tell him was mainly a waste of efÂfort; no ofÂfiÂcers ever let him make reÂports or asked him for facÂtual inÂforÂmaÂtion. WantÂing my nugget of deÂtail, I beÂcame his favourite.
It took him a while to hunt through screeds of spiÂdery obÂserÂvaÂtion notes. But stuck in the room where the coÂhort shut him away on his own, he had orÂganÂised a filÂing sysÂtem; it even conÂtained an inÂdex. He found what I wanted.
Like all hitÂmen, TurÂcus proÂtected himÂself with seÂcrecy. HowÂever, JuÂvenÂtus had taken an inÂterÂest afÂter he had met the man. He once heard a salami-sellerâs wife telling a garÂland-makÂing florist the disÂtrict where TurÂcus lived with his famÂily.
The disÂtrict was enough for me. I went there. I made enÂquiries. EvÂeryÂone loÂcally thought TurÂcus was a deÂcent busiÂnessÂman â so to them it was no seÂcret where he lived. He supÂported the loÂcal temÂple. He served as a neighÂbourÂhood ofÂfiÂcer. His team (that key mark of charÂacÂter in Rome) was the Blues.
Tiberius supÂported the Golds, on the kindly grounds that someÂbody had to, but my faÂther also preÂferred the Blues so I warmed to this killer in adÂvance. Rome is a city of traÂdiÂtion, where your charÂiot loyÂalty is inÂherÂited with your eyeÂsight and your bunions. Even though I was adopted, it had alÂways been exÂplained to me whom I must shout for in a staÂdium.
