Chapter 19
THE COURT: Mr. Allen, please explain how you came across these documents.
MR ALLEN: See, itâs the strangest damned thing. Some fella Iâd never met before came by my house while I was eatinâ supper. I invited him in, oâ course, gave him a plate, but he werenât hungry. He said that Iâd been right all along, that Barry Bowle was a damned liar, that heâd taken the money andâ
PROSECUTION: Objection! Hearsay.
DEFENSE: This statement isnât the evidence, heâs explaining how he got the evidence.
THE COURT: Overruled.
MR ALLEN: Well, yeah, heâd taken my money and sent it off north. I told the stranger I knew I was right, but I couldnât do a damned thing about it on account of Bowle being the Mayor, and well liked besides, but the stranger said there was proof in Bowleâs office, in a box under his filing cabinet. I told him he was playing me for a fool, but the stranger insisted, so after I wished him well I went and snuck in while Bowle werenât looking and sure enough, found a box of receipts showing heâd taken my papaâs gold and sent it to a bank up north.
DEFENSE: These receipts were filed with evidence before the start of the trial. The signatures were verified as Mayor Bowleâs.
PROSECUTION: And then you killed him in a vengeful rage?
DEFENSE: Objection! Leading.
THE COURT: Sustained. Keep the questions neat.
PROSECUTION: And then what did you do, after finding these receipts?
MR ALLEN: Got mad, figgered on some revenge, so I went and killed him.
Court transcripts from the trial of Quilby Allen. He was sentenced to thirty years hard labor for the murder of Mayor Bowle. Due to the difficulty in electing a replacement, one year after the Mayorâs death, the town had no leadership in place. The entire town and surrounding lands were bought up piecemeal by industrial interests
