Chapter 25
There had to a shallow grave or building Maxâs body had been left in. He had to look right now. And his ghostly speed would shorten the search.
Still north of town, he raced for and found the road, which he followed north. Maybe an obvious path from there had piqued the Dark Trioâs interest and suggested a place to dispose of him. Where would three players hide a body in the short time theyâd had? They could not have gone far.
Ahead, the land undulated over rolling hills, bursts of lightning illuminating small stands of trees as rain fell. He came across a burned-out building, only the masonry remaining. Nothing. They couldâve used this as a landmark, so he searched in widening concentric circles. Still nothing. After returning to the main road, he repeated this elsewhere. Two hours passed before he conceded defeat. He might have to try this again in daylight.
Unable to logout, respawn, or even sleep, Max had nothing to do, so he decided to learn as much as possible about the town and castle while he could go through walls. The keep was higher priority, partly because more karelia to avoid were likely in town. He bypassed it to the west, soaring over the cleared land. He skipped the Florin Tower for having been inside already and the fear of scaring the birds.
First, he went into his barracks. A quick search found only a stash of weapons and armor he hadnât known about, and a rack of scrolls he worried about disturbing. He moved through the kitchens, servant quarters, and other places before checking the dungeon, where Norus and Evanel, the niquerra he agreed to free, lay asleep. The guards came alert when Max, still invisible, flowed through the room.
âSudden chill in the air,â said one, shivering.
âIt happens down here sometimes, but not usually like this.â
Max raced through a stone wall so they wouldnât remember it long. What if people got to talking tomorrow, learning this had happened throughout the castle? Would the karelia realize what it meant? Maybe it didnât matter. One already knew, but Max didnât want to push his luck. Still, NPCs being asleep added urgency to do his now.
He accelerated, systematically checking floors, only pausing if all were asleep, which was most of the castle. In modern life, electricity salvaged nighttime, but not here. Only guards and a few others were awake after midnight. That made him wonder what would happen to him when the sun rose. Would daylight hurt him or restrict movement to inside? That would interfere with recovering his body or eavesdropping on the Dark Trio.
He stopped short. If they never returned, he might be screwed. He couldnât identify them to Siren, whom he couldnât communicate with anyway. She had no way of knowing to follow them to find his body. Right now, she didnât even know heâd been killed. He had to tell Ardyn to tell her. He shouldâve thought of that sooner, but he had time and would do it once done with the castle.
