Mummy also went to school for three days like me. It wasn’t the same as her university classes, but she and her friends had a school where they learned and practiced their English. At home, Mummy would teach me English too. It’s fun to learn different languages and how there are many different words for the same things. Like in Syria, we speak Arabic, and when you meet someone new, you say, “Marhaba.” But in English you say, “Hi, it’s nice to meet you.” Or baskwyt is “cookie” in English, and dammia is “doll.” You have to have a good memory to remember two names for everything. And you have to practice a lot or you will forget the words. That’s why Mummy and I wanted to go to school—so we could practice and be clever.
