“It’s not rape if I am willing.” Nathan whispered argumentatively to nurse Alison.

“It is as long as he’s on duty and you’re on morphine.” The blond nurse brought her morning smile back around to face Nathan, and held the cups out to him, then went to pull his sheets and covers back into the proper places before checking the IVs that ran into his arm. “Grey’s a good man and he deserves a good one in return.”

Nathan swallowed the pills and set the medicine cups on the tray all while he watched her, then shot a glance to the door where Grey had ducked out, “I’m just half a man is what you’re saying and I’m no good for him?”

She stopped, tossing a fist on her hip and just looked at him with a severe expression, “Well if that’s what you’re thinking, then know this, a man doesn’t do the job Grey does and not become affected by it. Those boys out there make it in here because of him, not for any other reason. Not even the grace of God does that. You can bet your cannons on it. He’s broken too, you just can’t see it.”

Nathan glanced up at her, not a joking word in her body language, “Not a religious woman, huh?”

“Oh, I believe in God, but this is war and God don’t pick sides, hun. That’s just human stupidity to think the Almighty is that narrow minded to choose one child over another just because they fight over their toys. However, when Grey’s partner back home wrote him a Dear John letter, it broke him. So if you’re only half a man— he’s even less. And just maybe, together, two halves can make a whole out of you both stubborn jack-asses.”
