I refresh my inbox a few times, but no response.

I drift off to sleep, hearing my mother’s voice.

Two Years Later

“Wake up, Seth.” Her voice fills my head and I smile.

“No. You come here.” I reach out, pulling her against my body.

“It’s ten o’clock. We’re going to be late.”

Shit.

I open my eyes and Meredith is smiling ear to ear. “I can’t wait to meet your family today.”

I can’t believe it’s been almost two years, and we haven’t brought each other home to meet our respective families. Granted, our relationship started out at a snail’s pace. Well, after the ‘Hand Job Incident’ as we both affectionately refer to it. At her suggestion, we started going to Al-Anon together, and then we started going together. We haven’t attended a meeting in almost six months, because I think we’ve both gotten out of them what we needed. For now.

And we did have some rough patches during the past few months, as she’s been struggling with her impulse issues. But we’re better now, I think. I hope.

“I can’t wait either.” My mom’s been home for a long time and hasn’t relapsed that I know of. My sisters can’t wait to meet Meredith, since I finally told them about her a few months ago. I haven’t shared much information with anyone in my family about any relationships that I’ve had in the past, mostly because they were just hookups. I don’t know if my father will be there. My stomach clenches at the thought of it. But I’ll deal with that if I need to. Sean is in Europe, working.

“Can we be a little late?” I kiss her neck and nip at her collarbone, knowing exactly what makes her melt.

“No! I don’t want to start off on the wrong foot with your family.” She slaps my hands away from her waist and reluctantly pulls away from my body.

She gets in the shower and says, “If this goes well and your family falls in love with me, we should think about moving in together. What do you think?”

I don’t answer her right away as I power up my laptop. “Hey, did you hear me?” she calls from the bathroom.

“I heard you.” I smirk. “Just leaving you hanging. I need to think long and hard about that.” I laugh, knowing that I was going to suggest it as soon as our junior year finished. I rent the apartment that I’m in now, but I’ve been looking for bigger places further off campus to purchase. I would love to start senior year with Meredith in my bed every single night.

“Don’t think too long, Seth.” I hear her smile through her voice as I open my email.

There’s a note from Juliet. “Tell Jules I said hello!” Meredith calls from the shower.
