The Laws According to Ruth:

She was looking over the list of laws that had been sent by courier to Sparta. Despite her anger and overwhelming sense of contempt not only for the list of laws, but for the arrogant scum who’d written them, Melissa Warner was doing her best to remain calm. Her first libertarian instinct had been to take the list from the fellow who’d brought them and tear it into pieces in front of him. He must have been amused to see her color rise at her initial reading. But she had refrained from succumbing to that first blush of rage and had agreed to take them to the Council for inspection.

In fact, she rather liked the courier they’d sent. Of course they’d known that. He was a bright young fellow—not much more than a boy, really—and he was handsome and personable and terribly friendly. He was also quite liberal with the flattery; in fact, he was rather skilled at it, and Melissa had to keep reminding herself that he was a consummate diplomat and certainly not to be trusted past the distance she could toss his muscular ass.

There was also the nature of the list. She snarled, now that she had left the courier’s line of sight. It was in a very nice leather sheath and was tied up with a red ribbon—silk, she suspected. And it was on very high quality paper. The biggest and nastiest part of it was that it had been prepared in the form of a scroll.

Those arrogant motherfuckers, she thought.

To wrap up this bit of pernicious shit like a Biblical scroll...it was high theater, she had to admit. But it was also as purely evil as anything she had ever witnessed. Once again she had to stop herself from opening the leather container and ripping City of Ruth’s “laws” into confetti.

Breathing deeply in an attempt to channel the anger that was coursing through her, brightening her already ruddy complexion, Melissa came to a stop and opened up the leather roll that held the scroll. She removed the scroll, tossed the empty container on the earth, and stomped it beneath her last good pair of boots. She stomped on it until it was crushed and she heard the bamboo ribs that shaped it snapping like dry branches under her heel. When she’d destroyed its symmetry she spat on it and kicked it to the side of the road where it skidded into the shadows beneath an azalea bed in someone’s yard.

Satisfied that the scroll would arrive at the city hall covered in the oils of her hands and at least some of her sweat, she hurried on, hoping that she would also at least slightly smudge it along the way.

Worst of all, they were demanding a parley. Demanding one! And she knew that they’d get it.
