CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

LIZ

Liz sat in the living room with Tia by her side, the girl reading a magazine, lit by a single candle on the glass coffee table in front of her. Hope was at the other end of the room, the end bathed in shadow. Liz could just about make her out, sitting at the table, drawing, despite the lack of light.

The others were scattered throughout the property, including Clara who had hardly spent any time inside, preferring to tinker with things in the large workshop at the back of the garage. The former librarian obviously felt happier, actually doing something. Liz could relate.

There was a creak from the hallway and the door opened. Mavis waddled inside with steaming mugs on a tray.

The older woman smiled at the inquisitive look from Tia. “I found some chocolate biscuits.” She paused for a moment, looking at the younger kid at the end of the room. “I… didn’t know if Hope would want anything.”

“I don’t think she does…” said Liz.

“Ah, well, more for us then.” Mavis placed the tray on the table. “Looks like everyone else is in their rooms.”

Tia started munching on a biscuit while Liz took a sip from her coffee.

Mavis sat in the armchair, taking a mug and some biscuits for herself. “Where’s Joe?”

“Keeping watch in one of the bedrooms…”

“How are you two? Must have been quite something, after what you have both been through?”

Liz forced a brief smile. It was a conversation she would rather not have. “Er… we are just taking it one day at a time. What else can any of us do… Somehow we found each other. I lost my mother in all of this, and…” she looked down. “Part of a limb. I just want to get to somewhere where we can be safe, with people who feel the same. Hopefully that’s the island we’re heading towards…”

Mavis began to ask another question, but Liz was thankful for the distraction of the sound of footsteps from around the back of the house, outside the patio doors.

“That must be Clara,” said Liz.

Mavis awkwardly stood. “I’ll see if she wants a coffee.” She walked out of the room, while the the external kitchen door opened.

Tia looked at her mother. “Do… you really think we can get there?”

“Of course I do. We will get there. We just need to be extra careful.”

Tia looked away.

The sound of water being run in the kitchen was mixed with muffled conversation. The livingroom opened, Clara appearing in the doorway with a towel across her hand, some of which was stained with blood.

“You okay?” said Liz.

“Yeah… I was stupid. I tried getting an old vice working and slipped. It left a pretty good—” While Clara was talking, Liz noticed Hope was sitting up in her chair, seemingly looking at Clara, although it was hard to tell with how dark it was on that side of the room. “— slice in my palm.”

Clara continued talking about the parts of machinery she had found, and thoughts
