CHAPTER FIFTEEN

My heart raced. Caught? As in "caught as my cousin's killer" caught? Even though I wanted to hear him spill some details to this Darla, I didn't feel like being upstairs with a potential murderer.

Brody must have been listening to Darla talk because we only heard him pacing the wood floor. "I wish he'd go in his pigsty so we could get outta here," I whispered to Whitney.

This time, he spoke in a singsong voice, "Your Brody-wody hates being away from his Dar-love." We looked at each other with gagging expressions. "And I will love you forever and ever, yeah, stay in my heart…" He started singing in an off-key, lounge singer-ish way. It was good that I'd emptied my bladder because Whitney and I were doubled over in a silent fit of laughter. The singing finally stopped, and he told her he'd call her back in a little bit.

The door handle moved a little, and our laughter was turned into panic. We'd expected to have to explain why we were in here, but we didn't think it would be because he wanted in here. I reached over and flushed the toilet.

"Occupied," I called out.

Whitney threw her hands in the air and looked at me like I'd lost my mind.

"I panicked," I said, barely above a whisper.

"Oh… um, sorry." Brody sounded like he didn't know anyone was in there.

I rewashed my hands, keeping up the ruse. I motioned for Whitney to come closer to me. "Can you hear him at all? I wonder if he's still out there."

Whitney pressed her ear against the door. She shrugged her shoulders and gave me a "no clue" look. Deciding we might as well suck it up and go for it, we unlocked the door and slowly opened it.

Brody was still standing in the wide hallway, looking at his phone. His head jerked up as we stepped through the doorway. He looked us up and down and smiled while smoothing his skinny mustache.

"Well, hello, ladies. I didn't know anyone was up here. I just thought the two guys outside with my dad were the only ones over."

Clearing my throat, I said, "Hello, I'm Emmy, this is Whitney. We brought a bunch of food over for you and your father." This man made me nervous, and I wouldn't say I liked how he looked at us. Not to mention, I knew he was a liar and was afraid of getting "caught" for something.

"We made up plates for both of you. Here, I'll show you." Whitney started toward the stairway. I had a feeling she got the same vibes from Brody.

"Well, that was really nice of you." He paused and looked at the bathroom then back at us. "You were both in there?"

My eyes darted to Whitney's as she tilted her head at an odd angle. I waved my hand at him and gave a little chuckle. "Oh, you know how girls are. We travel in packs."

A strange sound that I assumed was supposed to be a laugh came from Whitney.
