Chapter 21

Cold – Anatomy of a Tidal Wave

Kate is his sister and apparently he wasn’t too pleased with my impromptu appearance that night. Nor with the questions I kept bombarding him with after. He told me I’d imagined things. That I hit my head and I was hallucinating. That Kate didn’t react like she’d seen a ghost and she never asked me if I’m “his relative”. Initially, I thought she’s a random friend of his and she was asking if I am related to Raymond in any way. As it turns out, though, Kate’s his lovely, thirty-year-old sister. And I’m stupid. Not that he said it out loud, but he, once again, implied it. Loud and clear. A sort of shut the fuck up, you know nothing kind of thing. So, I let it go. I did. But I won’t forget about it. There’s something about their reaction, both his and Kate’s, that bothered and creeped the fuck out of me. I don’t know what it is yet, but I intend to find out.

He did take care of me though. Phoned his “personal” doctor and brought him over to the flat to have me checked out. The wound on my head was more of a scratch and the doctor blamed the fainting on the emotional trauma I suffered and the smoke I inhaled. He did tell Raymond to keep an eye on me over night though and he did as instructed. Too bad he had to leave in the morning. I wish we could’ve spent more time together. But whatever happened the previous day had him nervous and agitated. He mentioned some meetings and checking on things, but he couldn’t quite look at me for more than two seconds at a time. Worse, we haven’t even talked since and it’s been four days already. Considering the state he was in and the fact I got him annoyed with so many questions might explain his behavior, but it still left me with a sour taste in my mouth and more frustration accumulated inside of me.

And my frustration has only grown bigger, especially since Denis was all over me after the incident and earlier today I also checked in with Chris. Other than a couple of scratches, he’s alright. But he seems to be acting weird as well. It’s either the shock he’s been through or I might’ve hit my head harder than I thought and I’m imagining things. Either way, it annoys the fuck out of me.

I make myself step into the club. Memories from last time when I was here fly through my head. People running. Screaming. Iordan pressing that trigger. That night. That night is impossible to forget. It all started here, Stefan’s hysteria. It started here, and he released the tension by hitting me.

Even with doing my best to avoid him, I couldn’t postpone it anymore. I have to see Stefan. Otherwise, he might show up at Denis’ and I don’t want to bring more trouble into his life.
