The buffets in Las Vegas really couldn’t be beaten, Maddox decided.

He was full and heavy, and he wouldn’t admit it to anyone, but he kind of loved the long, enclosed street. The occasional whoop of someone along the zipline above their heads filtered down as they wandered along. Justin hovered around them, never quite settled, but he came willingly whenever Ace dragged him close, and he’d leaned in obligingly when Maddox had kissed him with the sticky teriyaki still clinging to his lips. Ace had enthusiastically recited all kinds of things that were fascinating while Maddox was watching the shape of his lips around the words, but the information didn’t stick around after that. He could Google it later, surely, or just ask Ace to tell him again.

Maybe they’d bring him there again if he pleaded ignorance convincingly enough. Maybe they’d have time to bring him there again. Give Maddox something to hold onto, a memory to keep him warm when he was in his apartment, home in LA with nothing but smog and the hum of traffic for company at night.
