Chapter 12

Rose sighed and leaned back as hands fell lightly on her shoulders. Late afternoon sunlight slanted through the French windows of the second-floor apartment that led onto a balcony surrounded by black wrought-iron railings. The sun warmed her skin through the thin robe she wore.

A man's hard-muscled body pressed against her as he put his arms around her. She closed her eyes and sighed again when he brought his hands up and cupped her breasts. His touch was so strong, so compelling, and yet so gentle at the same time.

She lived for moments like this. They made her life worthwhile. They were all that made her want to continue living. If he was ever taken away from her . . . if anything ever happened to Nick Murdoch . . . she didn't know what she would do.

But with any luck she would never have to find out. Soon she and Nick would leave New Orleans and go somewhere far, far away, a place where they could start over and live their own lives and be happy. The thought of that made Rose almost purr in contentment like a cat as Nick caressed her.

She felt his warm breath on the side of her neck as he nuzzled her ear, and she turned her head and opened her eyes, intending to kiss him.

Instead she found herself staring into the eyes of John Drummond.

Her husband.

The man who wanted to kill her.

Rose screamed. And screamed and screamed . . .

* * *

It was morning again, and the long night was over, along with the dreams that had catapulted her from sleep time and time again, drenched with sweat and shivering. Rose was grateful for that, and for the fact that evidently she hadn't actually screamed out loud. That would have disturbed the other boarders and brought someone to her room to find out what was wrong.

She had gotten up and left the boardinghouse early, as was her habit, so that she could arrive at the cafe well before first light. Today she had risen a little earlier than usual, in fact, since not even Abigail Paine had been up yet, and like Rose, Abigail awoke before dawn to get started preparing breakfast for her husband, their children, and their boarders.

Rose had been nervous as she walked through the darkened streets toward the cafe. The only lights and sounds in town came from the saloons on the eastern side of the settlement. Those places never closed. The west side of town was quiet and dark, however, and Rose thought that if Drummond and his men wanted to kill her with no witnesses around to ruin things, they would never have a better opportunity than now.

That was why as she walked she had her fingers wrapped around the butt of the little pistol hidden in her bag. If Drummond and his henchmen wanted her dead, she was sure she couldn't stop them from accomplishing their mission.

But she would take at least one of them—preferably John Drummond—to hell with her.
