Chapter 17

A Scavenger’s Bounty

As the fire blazed, casting swirling shadows on the shattered plane’s remains, John took up his knife, its blade eager to get back to work. He began the task of stripping the bear’s thick fur with delicate precision, a sensible precaution to give warmth in the brutal cold of the night. The untamed beauty of the fur was revealed with each stroke of the knife, a physical reminder of the monster that had previously roamed these lands.

The task at hand fascinated John as he skillfully held his knife, the worn blade slicing through the air. Once a symbol of raw power and ferocity, the bear’s fur now rested in his hands. He pulled the skin away with each delicate stroke, the soft strands of hair cradled by his worn palms. The warm glow of the fire lit the delicate patterns of the fur, generating flickering shadows that danced like echoes of a bygone era.

After carefully collecting the thick pelt, John turned his attention to the bear’s flesh, expertly slicing off chunks to be cooked over the fire. The aroma of sizzling meat filled the air, offering nutrition and relief from the agonizing hunger that had afflicted them for far too long. It was a basic act, the act of survival itself, as John’s talented hands collaborated with the roaring flames, transforming nature’s bounty into nutrition.

“This will help us to keep our strength up,” he said to the boy. “I suggest you eat as much as you can, kid. You’re going to need it.”

John’s calloused fingertips caressed the old handles and dented corners of the cases as if caressing the memories contained within. Each item was a window to a bygone period, a vessel that once contained its owners’ goals and aspirations. As he continued to explore, a surge of excitement welled up within him, anxious to discover the secrets concealed behind the bounds of these lost journeys.

John unlatched the first suitcase with trepidation, finding a treasure trove of optimism amidst the devastation. Fresh garments were nestled within, their bright colors a startling contrast to the barren terrain that surrounded them. Socks, underpants, and a few shirts lay in perfect folds, unaffected by the world’s chaos. Each item of clothing conveyed a lingering echo of its owner’s hopes and goals.

As John held the garments in his hands, he couldn’t help but think of the people who had formerly worn them. He imagined a tired traveler dressed in these clothes navigating a crowded airport or embarking on a long-awaited journey. The weight of their significance tugged at his heartstrings, reminding him of lives cut short and hopes crushed.

With gratitude and a touch of reverence, John carefully folded the items and tucked them away, cherishing the newfound treasure. They would serve
