Chapter 13

“I don’t remember.” Liz shivered.

“Dad, you okay back there?” Will glanced back at his father, concerned about the man’s pallor.

“I will be. Still a bit out of breath. Do you need something?”

“Do you see a black duffle bag back there anywhere?”

“I see a whole lot of shopping bags.” Coach shifted a few items around. “Wait, I think I see it.”

Will heard his father grunt as he crawled further into the back of the SUV. He whispered encouragement to Liz while he waited.

“Found it, I think.”

Will heard the rasp of the zipper. “Is there a blanket inside?”

“There is. Hang on.”

Coach tossed the blanket toward the front of the vehicle, hitting Will in the arm.

“Thanks, Coach.” Will glanced back once more as he unfolded the blanket. “Sit back again and rest. We don’t need you back in the hospital, as well.”

“Sounds good to me.” Coach resumed his perch at the end of the cargo area, this time keeping his legs up inside.

Will spread the blanket over Liz. “How are you doing?”

“I want to get out. Help me up.” Liz pushed at the blanket.

“No.” Will spoke more sharply than he intended. He closed his eyes for a moment and tried again. “You can’t, Babe. You could have unseen injuries.”

“You get out of your racecar with less damage than this one has.” Liz pushed at Will’s hands as he tucked the blanket around her again.

“You have far less protection in this street car than I do in my racecar. You’ve been bounced around and jostled and could have a spinal injury or something. You will sit here until you’ve been checked out, and then you’ll go to the hospital in the ambulance and make sure you and the baby are both well.” Will’s worries made his voice harsh.

“I’m fine,” Liz insisted, even as she shivered. Her head fell back and she turned it toward her husband. “How much longer?”

“I hear sirens,” Will replied, cocking his head to listen. “Not much longer.”

The cops arrived first. Two cars, both containing Mecklenburg County Sheriff deputies, screeched to a halt behind Will’s truck. By the time they reached Liz’s vehicle, the fire rescue truck and an ambulance had also arrived. It was not long before Liz had been extracted from her vehicle and loaded into the ambulance, Will at her side. Coach followed them to the hospital in Will’s truck.

Georgie and Edie were in the waiting room when Liz arrived, as were Jane and Charles. Will walked alongside the gurney, holding his wife’s hand; seeing everyone rising from their seats, he leaned down to whisper to Liz, then kissed her fingers and let go. He watched the gurney until the swinging doors closed behind it, and by then, he was surrounded with loved ones.

“What happened?” Jane was the first to speak, grabbing Will’s arm to gain his attention. Charles walked up to stand behind her.

“She’s okay. We were talking the whole way here.” Will didn’t want any of them to worry, so he gave them his assurances before he answered Jane’s question.
