HENRY
I arrive at the Ritz dressed in a black tie tuxedo, which I rented earlier that day.
The rental costs me three hundred and thatâs way above my budget. But I canât miss seeing her in real life.
I'm supposed to be in North Dakota today, beginning my research, but I fly back just to attend Auroraâs engagement party.
She told me that she didn't want to see me at the wedding, but she didnât say anything about the engagement party.
Franklin invited me to that as well, and I canât resist.
Walking through the double doors of one of the fanciest hotels in New York City, I feel out of place. I'm pretty sure that even the doorman makes more money than I do. Still, I need to see her if only to confirm the fact that she is actually getting married.
When Aurora called me that night, I did not expect to talk to her for close to an hour. In fact, I didn't expect her to call me at all.
But she did, and now I can't stop thinking about her or the fact that she might be lying.
I used to think that sheâd cheated on me, but now I'm pretty certain that she did not.
What I do think is that she's marrying him against her will.
Is that crazy?
I mean, that would never happen in this day and age.
And that would certainly not happen to an heiress, right?
I ask the doorman about the Tate/ Parks engagement party and he points me to the ballroom at the end of the hallway.
Most of the people inside are much older than I am, probably Auroraâs parentsâ friends. There are elegant draperies all around and all the guests are dressed in gowns. The room looks like a wedding reception rather than an engagement party.
I slowly make my way toward the bar in the back and spot Franklin holding court with Auroraâs father. Avoiding them, I start to make my way back around the room. When I come out of the ballroom, I run straight into her.
Without a second thought, she throws her arms around me.
âWhat are you doing here?â she whispers into my ear.
âI'm sorry about that,â she says, pulling away and hiding her exuberance behind a facade of appropriateness. âHow are you?â
âI'm good, how are you?â I ask.
âFine,â she says quietly, looking down at her feet.
Dressed in a short black dress, with thick straps and high stilettos, she doesn't really look like the woman I used to date. This person is buttoned up and so put together that she doesnât look comfortable in her own skin.
Aurora shifts her weight from one foot to another and looks up at me with her big wide eyes. For a second, it looks like sheâs pleading for me to do something. What, I donât know.
âAre you okay?â I ask, putting my hand on her arm.
She jerks it away and folds her arms across her chest. âYes, of course, I'm fine.â
We stand staring at each other, neither of us saying a word.
âArenât you going to congratulate me?â she asks.
