CHAPTER TWENTY
Ben moved his arm from under Carmenâs legs and held her close to his side as he reached out and yanked a pink puffy quilt off the king-size bed. A light blanket and top sheet went with it, leaving the bed bare except for the bottom sheet, which was, of course, pinkâTaliaâs favorite color. Please donât think about Talia, Ben. One wrong thought or bad memory could bring all of this to an end.
Maybe it should end. Maybe this whole thing was wrong. Carmenâs heart pounded with anticipation, combined with dread that she might not please him. This was the first time in a long time for both of them, but Ben did not seem worried. He pulled off the scrunchy that held her ponytail and let her hair fall around her shoulders, then climbed onto the bed and pulled her onto it with him. She nestled her head against a pillow as he straddled her and leaned close, covering her mouth with his own in a kiss so deep it was as though he was already making love to her.
This was it. There was no stopping or going back. Without another word, Ben grasped the hem of her big shirt and pulled it up over her head. She raised her arms and let him pull it all the way off, revealing the sports bra underneath. With no need to unclasp anything, he slipped that off, too, and leaned down to kiss each breast, caressing her nipples with his tongue and lips.
With one hand, he unbuttoned his jeans. Carmen ran her hands over his chest while he pushed down both the jeans and his underwear and tossed the clothing to the floor beside her shirt and sports bra.
He stretched out on top of her and pressed his body against hers. The erection she felt against private places told her all she needed to know. He was a big man in every way. The way he searched her mouth again made her feel wanton, hungry, desperate, madly in love. His long hair fell on either side of her so that it seemed nothing else in the world existed but this beautiful man who had so many needs she wasnât sure she could meet all of them. She felt surrounded by his virility, by strength and protection, guarded by the wolf spirit.
It was far too late now for any doubt. Far too late to worry about how wrong this might be. Far too late to deny the burning passion they had both danced around since Ben walked her back to those wolf cages.
This, too, was like a dance ⦠an exotic ritual no different from a religious ceremony that meant promise, commitment, and devotion. Like a prayer, this was not just an act they both had neglected for too long nor something to be taken lightly. This was not need or lust or just for the fun of it. This was worship, and that was how Ben made her feel. Worshipped.
