Not yet. But he would find us. No way to hide that from her.
Swimming through her fear, fighting to surface, was a monster of hunger. It wanted smack, even from Psycho Cop.
Hank’s bringing you more Vicodin.
It’s not the same. It doesn’t rescue me from—this.
Hank delivered our stuff late in the afternoon. He scrunched his shoulders the way he always did when he was pissed or hassled. “I ran all over town looking for a goddamn art store. I’ll get the Vicodin from my doctor tomorrow afternoon.” He was already halfway out the door. “I heard back from Ed. You can stay at his house, but I can’t get you moved until tomorrow.”
Unless Psycho Cop found us first. “Thanks, Hank.”
“You’re welcome. Just don’t trash the place.”
Lisa snatched the bag of art supplies and hurried upstairs. I followed and watched her unpack the drawing pad and boxes of pencils and charcoal. She sat on the wood floor, cross-legged on a bed pillow, her exhaustion gone. The moment she touched pencil to paper, energy surged through her and into the images.
With quick strokes, she drew the lamprey daemon, its body twisting from Psycho Cop’s gaping mouth, its own mouth gaping in a visual echo. She used a finer pencil to define its needle-like teeth. She sketched Psycho Cop’s bulky torso without detail. It was only a container for the daemon, which curled around and around his spine and weaved its tail through his intestines.
Rooted in him, I said.
You could say that. Lisa smudged the charcoal to give the drawing shape and depth and shadow. Then she tore the sheet of paper from the pad, set it aside, and began another.
A female figure with its arms raised exultantly, wreathed in flame.
Chama, I said.
No.
