Somewhat sobered by the near-death experience, my dad got out of the car to urinate. While turning the snow yellow, he gazed down at the snow-covered valley below. The distance seemed endless.

An officer driving by pulled over and issued my father a citation for public urination. Once again, the police missed the big picture. My dad was well beyond the blood alcohol limit for safe driving.

A little while later, we reached our chosen motel that was lodged into the side of the mountain. The view was breathtaking, and the room was cheap. To further save money, my father had brought a hibachi to cook hamburgers for dinner. Staggering to light the grill on the balcony, he found to his dismay that the snow was still falling. It kept putting out the flame. After several frustrating minutes, my dad got what he thought was a brilliant idea. He would bring the hibachi inside the room to cook the burgers.

Dinner turned out to be tasty, but it was getting a bit smoky in the room. My dad was too drunk to realize that some of the charcoal was still smoldering. Just before passing out, he told me to open a window. He was now hot, but he was too drunk to do it himself.

Upon the checkout inspection of the room the next morning, the hotel manager noticed a rather large hole burned into the beige carpet. After hearing that we had brought our grill into the enclosed room, he explained that he was not angry about the damage. Instead, he was grateful to see we were alive. Had I not opened the window, he informed us, we would have died from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Soon after the emerald mining trip, my father found himself at the front of an AA meeting. Perhaps two near-death experiences in one day had been enough for him. He went cold turkey and suffered through agonizing convulsions on his bed. He would stay sober for two years before relapsing.
