Chapter Seven

Davina

I'm a bundle of raw energy and jagged nerves by the time I arrive at Micah's office on Monday morning. I have no idea how I'm supposed to pull this off and pretend that I'm not madly in love with this man. But somehow, that's what I'm supposed to do.

I take the elevator up to his floor, trying desperately to pretend everything is normal and I didn't spend the night wrapped in his arms—that he didn't drive me home just a couple of hours ago so I could get ready for the day.

Stanley stands beside me, smoothing his overpriced suit. "Borden can be a prick," he says. The smug look on his face bounces back to me from the chrome and glass walls. "Just let me handle him."

I cut my eyes at him.

"Really? I've heard that he's nice," Sharon, one of the older paralegal's says before I can say anything. "Everyone around town loves him."

Stanley's smug expression slips. He hates being challenged. "Yes, well, they've never worked with him before, have they?"

"Well, I suppose they haven't." Sharon fidgets under his cold gaze.

"He's a shark," Stanley snaps at the older woman. "Just do what you're told and let me handle him."

"Of course, Mr. Maynard."

I reach out, touching her hand. She glances at me, giving me a small, grateful smile. Everyone on staff hates Stanley. He's a jerk for no reason. He's wrong about Micah, though. Micah isn't any of the things he said. He's amazing—a far better man than our boss will ever be. Stanley is just jealous that he'll never compete. He can't because he doesn't even compare.

He's a despot with thinning hair, icy blue eyes, and a smile that reminds me of a fish gasping when it's hauled out of the water. I really don't like him.

Thankfully, the elevator shudders to a stop on the top floor of Micah's building before he can say anything else. The doors slide open.

Naturally, Stanley pastes a smile on his face as he steps out to greet Micah, acting like he wasn't just talking crap about him. Jerk.

"Mr. Borden," Stanley says, his voice booming with false enthusiasm. "It's great to see you again."

Barely concealed contempt drips from Micah as he glances over Stanley, his lip curled up as if he can't stand the sight of my boss. He doesn't take his proffered hand, instead grunting as he looks past him into the elevator. His whiskey eyes land on me, desire rolling through his expression like a heatwave.

I bite my lip, fighting the urge to moan out loud. He looks so damn fierce standing there in his dark suit, those whiskey eyes eating me alive. Despite his polished, urbane appearance, there's an aura of danger and power emanating from him that's both alluring and intimidating as hell.

"Mr. Borden," I whisper, stepping forward to greet him.

"Micah," he growls, his voice sending shivers down my spine. He steps toward the elevator, thrusting his arm out to keep the doors from closing on me and Sharon.

"Micah," I repeat, my body skimming his as I step around him.
