“Mom, that needs to go into the truck,” Gray called out, noting her mother was holding her laptop case. “The cab.”

Bernadette gave her a salute of acknowledgment and headed in that direction. Gray was taping the final box, all the non-perishable goods they’d decided to take with them packed inside to at least get a bit of a start in the small kitchen in the apartment above the deli. Gray had only seen it the one time during their trip to see Violet’s parents the year before, and from what she remembered, space would be limited.

After three years, they had both graduated from the University of Denver and were ready to move on in their lives together and their careers. After an internship with the Denver Post, Gray had landed an entry-level-as-it-gets job as a journalist with the New York Times while Violet had been accepted into Columbia’s PhD program in psychology.

Gray stacked the food box onto the other kitchen box that needed to be loaded into the U-Haul and headed outside carrying both. Two years before, Michael had moved out when he and Luke got a place together, so just shy of a year of dating, Gray and Violet had decided it was time to take the next step. Violet had been added to the lease and had moved in.

Things had gone well, though certainly an adjustment. It had helped that Michael had been such a Mother Hen, as it had readied Gray for the accountability of a live-in girlfriend.

“Hey, Dad,” she greeted, stepping out into the warm, late spring day as she walked across the grass to the box truck parked at the curb. “Mom tell you you guys are doing Christmas with us in New York this year?”

“She did!” he said, giving her a big grin and thumbs-up from where he was wheeling himself from his specially modified van up the path toward the building. “Can’t wait, kid.”

“Gray?” Violet said from inside the truck.

“Yes’m?” Gray asked, setting the two boxes on the end near the bumper.

“Why is this in here?” she asked, holding out the shoebox that had been tucked away, forgotten really, in Gray’s closet.

Gray hopped up into the truck and walked over to her. “I’m sorry, babe,” she said. “Guess it just got scooped up with everything else.”

Violet, who looked less than happy, studied Gray. “This belonged to your ex, Gray. It doesn’t need to go with us to New York. I honestly don’t even know why you still have it.”

Gray took the box from her. Years ago, she’d given Violet minimal details about the box and why it was in her possession. She hadn’t shared much about Christian, somehow wanting to keep that to herself. But now, Violet was right. It had no place going with them to their next phase of life.

“I’ll take care of it,” she said, leaning over and giving Violet a lingering kiss on the lips. “Sorry. I didn’t mean for it to get in the truck,” she said honestly.
