Chapter Seven

“Get the light,” June said, stumbling through the back door to the bakery while partially holding me in her arms.

Overwhelmed by her presence and how vibrant her aura had gotten since we left the restaurant, I blindly searched for the light switch behind me, then melted against her.

A part of me wanted to close my eyes and follow her wherever she wanted me to go. The other part of me wanted to keep an eye on her aura to make sure things were going well.

You need to trust her, I told myself, finally closing my eyes as she guided me toward one of the walls.

“Open your eyes,” June said with a playful lilt in her voice.

“I…” I wet my lips and tried again, this time with more success. “I’ll get distracted.” By her, her aura, or whatever images flickered through my mind.

Not that closing my eyes would’ve helped with that, mind you. I could already see where this was going, and my entire body buzzed with energy.

“By me?” she asked in the same tone as before.

“Your aura,” I said, my voice tight when I met her gaze.

“Then focus on me. Only me.” She placed a hand on my arm and gave it a squeeze, grounding me. “Is this too much?” June asked when I refused to move.

“No.” The pressure was perfect. “I’m just trying to breathe, that's all.” The anticipation and the possibility of kissing her had me all twisted inside.

June paused, then slowly let go.

However, before she could step away, I took her hand in mine and pulled her close.

“I didn’t say you could leave,” I said, losing myself in her eyes and the flame that sparked behind them.

“Oh?” June raised an eyebrow at me, then tucked a tendril of blonde hair behind my ear. “I’ve been dying to do that all night.”

“My hair?”

“It was driving me crazy.”

“I’ll be sure to tie it back better next time.”

“Don’t,” she said, moving her hand down to the side of my neck.

“How come?” She said it was bothering her.

“Because then I can do this.”

Do what? I wanted to ask. However, before I could, June placed her hand on the nape of my neck and gently kissed me on the lips.

It was a whisper of a kiss, barely there, but still enough to make my head dizzy with need.

A thrill rushed down my spine, causing my body to tingle as I drove my fingers through her hair, getting tangled in the process. In the next instant, June sandwiched me between her and the wall, kissing me hard.

My cheeks warmed as she deepened our kiss with her tongue. My stomach flipped when the hand on the nape of my neck moved a little lower.

And when she held me close with her hand on the small of my back?

I melted through the floorboards.

“Are you okay?” she asked, breaking our kiss before pressing her forehead to mine.

“I… yeah.” At some point, I’d moved my hands to the sides of her neck even though I couldn’t remember doing so.
