Allison watched Carly Rae ride off at breakneck speed, disappearing within the rolling hills. She adjusted her weight in the saddle and pet Gidget’s neck. “I wish you could talk. I bet you’d tell me all about her.”

“You’re not from around here,” Joe said, slowing so that he was next to her with his smug grin. He had a thin mustache and soul patch of hair just below his bottom lip that made him look like a little boy who was trying to be a man. She guessed he was her age, perhaps a couple of years younger.

“No,” she replied.

“Tell me, what’s a city girl like you doing out here slumming it as a ranch hand? You certainly don’t look like you need the money.”

She drew in a deep breath to keep from telling him off. The French blood in her always heated quickly. “I wasn’t hired. I’m a friend of Carly Rae’s. She brought me along to meet her family and see how their ranch was run.”

“So…basically, you’re free labor. Who the hell would want to drive cattle to see what it was all about?” He shook his head.

“I guess you wouldn’t understand,” she said.

“Well, you look like you know how to handle a horse, but I’d be happy to give you some pointers.” He smiled, wiggling his brows. “There will be a lot more involved than just riding a horse once we get into the thick of it tomorrow.”

“Thank you, but I’m sure I will be fine.”

He shrugged and increased his pace as Carly Rae and the creek came into view.
