Many other mobsters were put on the grill, including Johnny Torrio.

“Why should I have Dion killed?” he asked. “I just arranged for Mr. Ioele to give him $2,000 worth of floral business.”

“How can you ask me if I knocked him off?” Capone asked with a pained expression. “My brother Frank would never forgive me after all those nice flowers Dion sent for the funeral of my beloved friend Miguel.”

The responses from all the other mobsters suspected of a capability to knock off O’Bannion were about the same.

After attending Merlo’s splashy funeral, Frankie Yale, Johnny Torrio, and Al Capone, flanked by bodyguards, entered the undertaker’s chapel where O’Bannion was laid out and sat in front of the bier.

War preparations began to take shape almost immediately after O’Bannion was laid to rest. Hymie Weiss, who took over O’Bannion’s mob, quickly fitted out a half-dozen large autos with the newest of weapons that were to bring gangland slaughter to a new high: Thompson sub-machine guns capable of firing seven hundred rounds a minute. A challenge was hurled by one of O’Bannion’s henchmen, Louie Alterie, a three-gun torpedo.

“Who killed my pal? Are they men? Let ’em face Louie. I’ll shoot it out with them all, anywhere, anytime, even at the corner of State and Madison.”

No one took up Louie’s challenge to have it out on Chicago’s busiest street corner; moreover the O’Bannion gang suddenly found itself leaderless when Louie mysteriously hightailed it out of the city. He stayed away for ten years.
