OLIVIER

Olivier stared at the plate of spaghetti and meatballs before him. It was too kind of him, really. Harvey was always too kind to him. Especially after the whole incident with Snowball. It was his fault. He had messed up. And he wanted to do nothing more than sink into the ground and hide, possibly forever.

But here he was, eating dinner with the man that made his heart sing and his palms sweat. Harvey had taken him and Snowball in without question or judgement. More than he could say about most people in his life. Being the son of two politicians made him feel like his every move was monitored and measured. He wondered how they were doing now. They'd be looking for him. Any day now, he fully expected the men in suits to show up on his doorstep and take him back "where he belonged."

As much as it pained him, he couldn't stay here. It would only drag them both down. He looked up at Harvey across the dinner table. Their eyes met for a moment as he felt a familiar chill down his spine. Harvey had been watching him. Oh.

Olivier looked down again, apparently very interested in his spaghetti. He shoveled a forkful into his mouth, hoping that meant he wouldn't have to talk. How could he tell Harvey the things that were running through his mind? How could he lay bare the fears and feelings knocking around his skull?

He couldn't. Olivier closed his eyes for a moment, taking in a deep breath through his nose.

Harvey's voice broke the silence. "So. You want to tell me what happened?"

Olivier's mouth went dry. There it was. No escaping now. Olivier's face, already a full red, blushed harder, and he turned away.

"I'm sorry," Olivier said, almost too quietly to hear. There was no help for it. Harvey will never like me again after this. "I was taking out the trash at the end of the day and the door didn't latch when I went out. Snowball, precious thing that she is, started following me. I tried to grab her, but I think that spooked her more and she ran off. I managed to follow her all the way here, and…" His face scrunched in a mask of guilt as he wrung his hands in his lap. This was all wrong.

"Hey," Harvey soothed, leaning over to place a hand on Olivier's shoulder. He flinched at the contact, but didn't pull away. "It's okay. People make mistakes."

Olivier smiled wistfully. I don't deserve this. "All I wanted to do was to be a good employee," Olivier mumbled. "I wanted to show you I knew what I was doing. I wanted to… well, I wanted to impress you."

Oops. He said it. He could still run. He could still get out of here, leave town again, forget this all had happened. Get away, get lost. Somehow, that seemed better than dealing with the uncertainty of the moment. Olivier held his breath and dug his fingers into the chair, waiting for the other shoe to drop.
