“Time to get up, Daddy.”

Rex smiled at the sweet, high-pitched voice of his daughter. “Is it?” He opened his eyes to find the little girl perched beside him. “Where’s Uncle Griffin?”

“He said it’s time for you to get up, and then he went to get in the shower,” Sarah said. “He said we have to go feed the new llamas.”

Rex sat up and drew his daughter into a hug. “How’d you sleep, pumpkin? I didn’t hear you get up.”

“I can tiptoe so quiet,” she said. “Watch.” She slid off the bed to the bean bag he’d brought into his room. Her pillow and blanket lay there in the little nest where she slept. She didn’t like sleeping alone, and he’d asked her if she’d had her own bedroom at her grandmother’s place in Bourne. She hadn’t. She’d always slept with Holly.

She demonstrated how quiet she could be, even opening and closing the door without a sound. She grinned from ear to ear when she opened the door again. “See?”

“I see,” he said. “That was awesome.” The clock read just after nine, and Rex stretched as he got up. “Have you eaten?”

“Cereal,” Sarah said. “Can you make apple pancakes?”

“Sure thing, sweets. Let’s go.” He reached for her hand, and they walked toward the kitchen. “You wanna ride your bike this morning?”

“Yep,” she said. “And Uncle Griffin looked up mini horses for me. He said we can go see one today.”

“Is that what he said?” Rex started laughing, because apparently he wasn’t the only one wrapped right around this little girl’s fingers. “You know, your momma isn’t so sure about getting a mini horse.”

“But we can keep them at the ranch. Uncle Griffin said it wouldn’t be a problem at all.” Sarah looked so hopeful, and yet so sad at the same time.

“Honey bun, Uncle Griffin isn’t in charge of the ranch. I told you, we have to talk to Uncle Russ and Uncle Seth.”

“I’ll ask ‘em,” she said, and Rex had no doubt that she’d get exactly what she wanted. Seth and Russ would never be able to say no to the angel with dark hair that had come into all of their lives.

Hours later, he pulled up to the ranch with Griffin and Sarah, and she skipped into the house, calling, “Uncle Russ! Uncle Russ!”

“Oh, boy,” Rex said under his breath. “Why’d you have to tell her we could go look at those horses?” They’d gone, and they were mighty cute. The farmer had six of them, and he was trying to sell the whole herd.

Miles Jensen had trained his herd to drive, show, and perform as therapy horses, and he wanted five grand for each of them. He wanted them to go to a good farm or ranch where the horses would be taken care of, worked, ridden, and shown. Rex could see his whole life spread before him as he stood in the pasture with the horses, and he saw Sarah taking care of them, showing them, and loving them until they day they died.
