“SO HE WAS AT CHURCH this morning?” Katy asked skeptically as they walked down the sidewalk toward the church house.

“I told you he would be.” Ames adjusted the hot dish in her hands. It smelled delicious. Her stomach rumbled.

“But I didn’t believe you. If he was so busy he couldn’t make it to the festival yesterday evening, I didn’t think he would make it to church today.” Her voice sounded whiny, and Ames was glad she was headed back to New York City tomorrow.

Katy pushed her dark sunglasses up. “I have a headache.”

“Didn’t you take the painkillers I gave you?”

“They haven’t started working yet. They need to kick in soon. I only have today to impress Palmer. Did he say anything about me?”

Ames kicked a stone off the sidewalk.

Katy continued. “I was a little out of it Friday night, but Palmer said he wanted to talk to you, and you guys were back there for a while. What was he saying?”

Boy, she didn’t want to go there. They hadn’t been talking. Not much, anyway.

If it weren’t so sad, it’d be laughable. Ames had been concerned that Palmer wouldn’t be able to handle Katy. But she had ended up with the opposite problem.

Katy smoothed a hand down her loose sweater and pants. “Maybe I should have worn jeans instead of these leggings. I should have borrowed a pair of your boots. Palmer probably likes a girl in boots.”

Ames wasn’t paying too much attention, just thinking about what a mess she’d made.

“Ames? Are you going to help me out? What did he say about me?” Irritation laced Katy’s voice.

Ames tried to think of something she could say that was nice but didn’t give Katy false hope. On the one hand, Katy might be willing to leave the city and move to Sweet Water at the rate she was obsessing over Palmer. But she didn’t put Ames in mind of the type of woman that would stay.

“I think Palmer moves slow.” That was true at least. It had taken him fifteen years to kiss her. The wait had been worth it. Every second of it. She wouldn’t mind more kissing like that. She tried to shut that thought down. Things had been pretty natural between them this morning. If they were going to salvage their friendship, she needed to push thoughts of kissing right out the window.

Katy giggled. “I think you’re right. I hinted around a couple of times that I wanted him to kiss me, but he just gave me that slow, sexy smile, and my heart pounded so loud and fast I didn’t even care that he never got around to it.” She adjusted the chain around her neck. “I bet he’d be a great kisser.”

Ames’s stomach tightened. Either from fear that Katy would ask her if she’d ever kissed Palmer or from the thought of Katy kissing Palmer. Either way, she needed a subject change.

“Palmer likes girls that can cook.”

“I’m really good at ordering takeout.”

“There is no takeout in Sweet Water.
