Chapter 13
The cold was making him shiver, but Sawyer was tired of looking weak in front of Georgia. Plus, he’d been pretending he wasn’t cold every winter of his life. Still, he could feel the vulnerability of his lungs and the fact that his body was barely at fifty percent.
But with this wind and the temps hovering just above zero, they needed to get that calf into shelter. He probably should have run out without eating breakfast. He would have too, if it had been just him.
Sometimes he forgot how tiny Georgia was, but this morning, he’d sat and eaten because she’d already worked for several hours in the cold and she was going to go right back out in it. He wanted her to have something warm and substantial in her belly. He didn’t want to lose that calf, but he couldn’t let anything happen to Georgia.
“I’m gonna pull it. Maybe we’ll get lucky, and it’ll start on one pull.” In his experience, getting lucky was less about luck and more about hard work, but he also didn’t believe in doing an unnecessary job. So he wasn’t going to operate on the snowmobile until he was sure it wasn’t going to start with a pull.
Two pulls and it didn’t even sound like it was firing. It did fire him, though. Hard. He wanted to stop and pant, but Georgia hadn’t wanted him out here to begin with; she’d not waste time sending him in if she thought he was overdoing it.
He pulled the hood up, and a light brightened the motor. Georgia’s phone.
“Thanks,” he said as he checked several connections and made sure there was no fuel leaking.
“Guess I ought to check for gas.” He gave a short laugh. He knew it was running when he parked it, but it might have been low enough that it wouldn’t start back up.
But, no. There was a quarter of a tank. Enough to get them out to the pasture and back. He should fill it up, but he wasn’t sure he had any gas sitting around.
He grabbed the ether from the shelf right by his head and sprayed the fuel line.
With a hand on the throttle, he pulled the cord with the other. Yeah, it sounded a little more lively that time.
After spending another ten minutes tinkering and checking and spraying, it finally started. He let it idle for a minute while he put the tools and ether he’d gotten out away and set the hood down and latched it.
“You mind holding the shed door open? I should be able to drive it out.”
Georgia shoved her phone in her pocket and stuck her glove back on. She walked to the door without saying anything and held it open.
The snowmobile motored right through.
“Hop on.”
Her eyes narrowed, and he thought she was going to argue. He hoped she didn’t because he really didn’t want her going out in the field by herself, especially since he didn’t know what the weather was going to be or how far away the cow might have gone.
