CHAPTER 15

COLT

“What do you think?” I asked Wyatt as I lunged around the round pen. After spending the last half of the day working with the horse, we had made significant progress, but I still couldn’t bring myself to get on him.

“I think he looks good, Colt.” He nodded, sitting up by the fence. “He seems to be real watchy of me, though,” he added with a frown. “Have you gotten up on him yet?”

“Nope,” I replied, making it a point not to look him in the eye. Wyatt wouldn’t be surprised by my lack of confidence to get up in a fresh horse’s saddle. In fact, he probably would’ve been surprised had I actually done that.

“You ought to,” he said, his eyes still following Jager around the round pen. “Go ahead and get him stopped,” he instructed. I nodded, swallowing the urge I had to fight him over the matter. I had asked my horse trainer of a brother for help and knew he was better than me at feeling a horse out. He had an eye for that sort of thing, though he had always insisted I had it, too. But it sure as hell didn’t feel like it.

“Unclip that longe line and bit him up. I don’t see why he won’t ride off for you just fine. I mean, he’s gonna be a bit hot since he’s a barrel horse, but you ride every single day. There ain’t no reason in the world you can’t ride out whatever he throws at you. You can’t just keep doin’ groundwork, Colt.”

I blew out a sigh, knowing he was right. I had spent the entire afternoon working with Jager, and he appeared ready to ride, I thought. I bridled and saddled him with ease, though he pranced a bit afterward, like he was unsure about what I was gonna be doing with him. The nerves started to build up in my chest as I pulled his head around, keeping him flexed so I could hop on and get him stopped in a hurry if I needed to.

“Quit bein’ so damn nervous, Colt!” Wyatt called, his voice growing stern. “You’re gonna transfer that anxiety right on over to Jager!”

“Sorry,” I muttered under my breath, noticing that my hands were shaking a little. I took another deep breath and lifted my foot to the stirrup. Jager took a step to the side, and I dropped my leg back down.

“Let me see him, bro,” Wyatt said, hopping down off the fence. “You’re makin’ him real nervous bein’ all uptight like that. I know you got your own PTSD, but he definitely does, too. Gotta relax.” His hand clapped on my shoulder as he walked up beside me, reaching for the reins. As soon as I took a step back away from him, Jager’s eyes went wide and he bolted, ripping the reins right out of Wyatt’s hands.

“Well shit,” I grumbled, my shoulders dropping in defeat. “I don’t get it,” I groaned, pulling my hat from my head and running my fingers through my hair.
