Juliette shook her head, not convinced. Still, she hesitated. She herself had made a kind of phony suicide attempt in early adulthood, when she’d seen her then boyfriend kissing one of her best friends. She’d retaliated by taking every pill she could lay her hands on until he gave up trying to stop her, called an ambulance, and started swallowing pills himself. Between them they’d emptied the entire contents of the medicine cabinet, contraceptive pills included, before the emergency services arrived. It all ended with a double stomach pump, and the following day they’d made love in the confines of a single bed in the hospital before being thrown out by a horrified nurse. Quite a good memory really, looking back.
