Rob reached out for Anthonyâs hand under the table. Anthonyâs mom looked at him, and he wondered if she somehow knew what heâd just done. Could the woman see through the wood or something? It was kind of creepy, but it wasnât enough for him to release Anthonyâs hand, not when Anthony clung onto it like a lifeline.
âSo, uh, Mom,â Anthony started. âYou know Iâm moving in with Dan and Bran, yeah?â
âOf course I do.â
âActually, why donât you call Dad? He probably needs to hear this too.â
Anthonyâs mother narrowed her eyes at him, but she nodded and left the kitchen. Anthony looked like he was about to jump out of his skin, and there was nothing Rob could do. He couldnât protect Anthony from his own mother, at least not in this case.
Anthonyâs mother came back with a man her age behind her. He didnât look as hostile as she did, and Rob was relieved that he might have one ally. Anthonyâs father sat at the table with them, but his mother stayed upright, hovering by the stove but never looking away from them.
Anthony nodded. âOkay, so I was supposed to wait until all the furniture arrived to move in with Dan, but really, my bedâs already there, and thereâs a couch, so I donât need to actually wait.â
Anthonyâs mom arched a brow. âAre you saying youâre moving out already?â
âYeah. Yeah, thatâs what Iâm saying.â
Her gaze flickered to Rob. âAnd I suppose he doesnât have anything to do with that decision?â
âMmm, well, he does. Mom, Dad, this is Rob. Rob, these are my mom and dad.â
Rob nodded at them. Anthonyâs father smiled at him, but his mother just nodded back, and he could see she wanted more information. Rob would let Anthony do the talking, though. He knew how to talk to his mother, just like Rob knew how to talk to his.
Anthonyâs mom sighed. âJust say it, honey. Iâm not stupid. I already have a good idea of what you want to say.â
âRight. Of course you do.â Anthony nodded. âOkay, so Robâs my mate, or rather, Iâm his.â
Anthonyâs father reached over the table and patted his sonâs hand. âIâm happy for you.â
And he looked happy. His smile had widened, and while he wasnât hugging Anthony, it was obvious he loved his son and that he wanted him to be happy.
Anthonyâs mother was silent for a moment, and Rob felt observed. She was examining him, wondering what he wanted from her son and if he really would stay with Anthony like mates were supposed to. Rob had expected it. Anthony and his family were human, and while Anthony had known about shifters for a bit longer than his parents, it was obvious they all had questions and doubts. The idea of mates was known to humans too, of course, but it wasnât the same. Soul mates werenât the same as mates for a shifter. Most humans didnât fully understand how important mates were for shifters, and if they did, they seldom let themselves believe in it.
