Bran was up at five A.M. just like always. He wished heâd woken up with Daniel next to him, but that would come soon enough. Theyâd met only the day before, and he hadnât really expected Daniel to accept to sleep in the same bed. Daniel was human, so heâd need some time to wrap his mind around everythingâthe fact that shifters were real, that one of them was his mate. The fact that he was going to move in with the pack and that Kameron would talk to the town first, then to the rest of the nation.
That was a scary thought. Bran had grown up with the need to hide what he was engrained in him. It was one of the first things that was taught to shifter children, and the idea of going against that didnât sit well with Bran. They didnât have a choice, though.
It didnât matter that Kameronâs computer guy had taken the video down only a few hours after itâd been uploaded. People had seen it, and while a portion of the population thought it was a scam, not everyone did. Sooner or later, they would demand answers, and they wouldnât accept lies.
It wasnât Branâs job to make decisions about what was going to be said. He was the head of the enforcers. His job was to coordinate the teams and to decide who went where, to make sure all of his enforcers were trained and able to do their job. That was all. Heâd accepted contacting one of his friends in the government to do Kameron a favor, but he wouldnât get into it. He didnât want to.
He started the coffee machine and sat at the kitchen table with his phone in hand. He dialed Donovanâs number, and he wasnât surprised when Donovan answered after only a few rings. âBran Morris. To what do I owe this honor? I thought youâd lost my number.â
Donovan and Bran had grown up in the same sleuth. Donovan was only a few years older than Bran, and theyâd been close as kids and teenagers. Theyâd grown apart over the years, but then they were respectively eighty-two and eighty-five.
Bran leaned back into his chair. âNah, you know Iâd never lose your number.â
âDoesnât explain why youâre calling. Something tells me itâs not for pleasure.â
âAnd youâre right.â
âCome on, spill the beans so we can talk about something else.â
Bran tapped his fingers on the table. âYou know about that video that was uploaded last month.â It wasnât a question. Donovan had to know, even though he hadnât said anything yet.
âDoesnât everyone?â
âWhat does the government want to do about it? Because Kameron Rhett is on that video, and he wonât be able to stay hidden for much longer.â
âI know about Alpha Rhett.â
âOf course you do. Look, he just wants to know what you guys are thinking before doing anything.â
Donovan sighed and Bran could almost see him. He probably had a mug of steaming coffee in hand. Black, no sugar or cream.
