Chapter Four

Scott sat at the kitchen counter sipping coffee, absently watching Jilly because his mind refused to stop thinking about the scene with Robby last night. Especially the part where he’d stormed out after dropping the little bombshell about having a wife. Karen is gone. What the fuck does that mean? And why hadn’t Scott had the balls to ask?

Jillian lowered the flame on the range and gave another stir to the oatmeal that would be Maddie’s breakfast whenever the little girl returned from her early morning hike with Park and his dogs. With a heavy sigh, Jillian poured herself a cup of coffee and sat on the stool next to Scott.

He shook his head and sighed dramatically. “I told you we’d bring you over to the dark side,” he said, eyeing her mug.

“Shut up,” she grumbled. “I don’t even like the stuff, but it’s always around and it smells so good. I thought I might try again, just to see. Maybe your brew will taste better than the first time I tried coffee.”

“Was that with Charlie and his ex?”

Jillian giggled. “Oh my gosh, I can’t tell you how weird it was to see him after all these years. Did you ever meet anyone you knew when you were a kid and it seemed like he was old until you met him again? Charlie would have been younger than I am now. Maybe eighteen or nineteen, I guess, but I thought he was so sophisticated.”

Scott laughed. “I have a hard time imagining anyone thinking of Charlie Turner as sophisticated.”

“Oh, but he was,” Jillian said. She stared toward the backdoor, a small smile curving her mouth. “He was so handsome…and so in love. I thought it was the most romantic thing.”

“It didn’t bother you that he was gay?”

A crease formed between her brows and her gaze drifted to Maddie’s highchair then she looked directly at Scott. “Why would it bother me? I certainly wasn’t in any situation to judge someone else…” Her eyes took on an extra sheen as she turned back to the chair. “If you truly love someone, then you have to be prepared to love them for who they really are…not who you imagine them to be. Or want them to be…”

“Funny, I keep hearing that,” Scott said, but he didn’t feel like laughing. He needed to return to a safer subject. “Try your coffee before it cools. It is good, I promise. Although, if you don’t like it black, you can try it with some of the French vanilla creamer I bought yesterday.”

“You drink it black,” she pointed out.

“Jilly, when we were on the fire line, I used to empty a packet of freeze-dried coffee straight onto my tongue. Trust me when I say you’ll never appreciate coffee the way I do.”

Sounds from the dining room drifted in through the doorway and they exchanged a glance. It was his turn to go out and greet the guests, but damn…it had been a long night.

How can you say
