In the morning, he woke up alone. Percy blinked the sleep from his eyes and took stock of the room. The lights were off, but he could make out Juney’s guitar where he’d left it last night. His notebook wasn’t on the table though.

As soon as he stood up, he was reminded of what he’d done last night. Juney’s dried cum between his legs made him feel filthy—inside and out. Shit. Shit. Shit. He rushed into the bathroom and turned the knob until it was as hot as it could go. He avoided the mirror and stepped into the large walk-in shower. It was the extra fancy type they had in their house back in Miami.

He grabbed a washcloth and roughly scrubbed himself clean, but he didn’t feel any less disgusted with himself.

He cheated on his fiancé. There had been so many opportunities to stop, but he hadn’t had the willpower. If Emilio had been knocking on the door, he still didn’t think he could’ve stopped.

God, no.

He was mindless in Juney’s arms, barely even conscious.

That wasn’t a good enough excuse, but he didn’t think anyone could understand how he’d felt last night. If they did, maybe they wouldn’t condemn him for it.

Was this how every cheater felt? Like they didn’t even have a choice in the matter? Maybe it was just him and his marrow-deep need to be the center of his best friend’s attention, to be possessed by him.

The more he thought about it the sicker he felt. As Juney had always said, it just wasn’t right. Percy hadn’t realized just how much he needed Juney and what that meant until it’d been too late. Juney had cut him off completely. Now he understood why.

This was his cross to bear now.

He shut off the water and quickly toweled himself dry. He stepped out of the bathroom with the towel around his waist and located the sweatpants he’d worn for all of five minutes last night and put them on. He stole one of Juney’s t-shirts too. It was one he’d already claimed as his anyway—they all were.

Anxiety was starting to swirl with the guilt that was already in his stomach. He didn’t think Juney would go and do something… he didn’t think he would…

He couldn’t even think about it. He threw the front door open and smelled cigarette smoke. Juney was sitting at the table on the porch with a pack of Marlboro reds on his thigh.

It was sad how relieved he felt. He wondered if he’d ever stop feeling like he was on the precipice of grief.

There were two untouched food trays on the table, and Percy quietly moved to sit down. The air was thick with humidity. It was already clinging to his skin, but Percy didn’t mind it. The smell of wet soil and salt and all the tropical plant life relaxed him. He loved going down to the beach at dawn and dusk after a storm had blown through. It was something like relief and awe.
