Chapter 3

The experience and resistance of enslaved people

The aim of this chapter is to explore what life was like for enslaved people in the Caribbean.

It will examine the horrific living and working conditions for enslaved people on the sugar plantations and the methods used by enslavers to maintain control over their enslaved workforce.

It will discuss other forms of slave labour on the Caribbean islands, such as the work that enslaved people were forced to do in the towns.

Finally, it will explore the ways in which enslaved people resisted on plantations, including everyday acts of resistance and attempts to overthrow the whole system of slavery itself. It will also highlight the ways in which enslavers responded to the fear of revolt by enslaved people.

Together, this will allow you to respond to questions from Key issue 3: The experience and resistance of enslaved people.
