Holding the note up in the lantern light, he sighed. He felt guilty, for he was not as excited about the tent as he was that Vivian had written the note. It was wrong of him to go all day without seeing or speaking to her. But, then, why should it be? What was happening to him? He felt his heart racing and then shook his head.

“Lord, I am a victim of my humanity...” he mumbled as he slipped off his boots.

Snuffing out the lantern, he hung up the saddlebags over the bedpost. He didn’t close his eyes until the Army Colt was under his pillow within easy reach.
