Chapter 16

The past few days had been a hectic-yet-productive confluence of different actions and events. Clive had increased his number of Pre-Corrupted he was planning on transforming fully up to just over 500, as he expanded from older teenagers to younger 20-something couples without young children. Not that children were much of an issue, but he wasn’t planning on killing any of them because FEAR-based attacks would have no tangible benefit (because minors always had innocent souls, no matter what he did). That was a lesson he had learned back when he had acquired his first two Minions; it was much easier to manipulate the Corruption status of those that didn’t have parental instincts to rely on to shield them from powerful FEAR-based attacks.

Luckily, utilizing those same parental instincts to protect their family from the “evil” intentions of their neighbors circumvented a lot of the resistance to FEAR-based attacks, as it deflected the source. As a result, his Intercommunal Machinations were proving to be a good way to decrease their Divine Power Extraction, as well providing plenty of FEAR.

Out of the approximately 10,000 people living in Pheasant’s Walk, there were just under 1,000 households equaling a little over 4,000 people that Clive had to rely wholly on Intercommunal Machinations to affect. For the children, while they were still affected by the attacks that had wider ranges, it was always a lot less than older non-minor siblings and their parents – and he never actually targeted them because there was always a better choice nearby.

His advancement through new Spiritual Levels had increased exponentially each day, netting him more and more access to Spiritual Force – especially when he continued to spread his Areas of Influence to their max. With 4,091 additional Areas of Influence, he now covered every single household with at least one sliver of his Core, allowing him unbridled access to everyone in the community. The only “dead spot” in his network of Influence was the Worship Center itself, but that was certainly on purpose. There was no need to risk exposure to the Hand if he could avoid it, and it was only a matter of time before he ended up initiating an attack to rescue his Minions.

Success was even more certain after he passed Spiritual Level 50 and unlocked another Special Ability. This was what his Corrupted had been missing from the beginning, and what had made using them dangerous for their safety; he didn’t want them immediately identified so that the Hand could destroy the Corrupted after all his hard work to create them, after all.
