Rebecca hadnât laughed so much in years. She truly liked being with the Tuckers. It had been a long time since sheâd felt like a part of a family. Not since she and Rachel had spent summers with her grandparents.
She stole a glance at the man seated next to her. Mitch Tucker would be a hard man to forget, along with his kids. No matter how unwise, she couldnât seem to keep her distance from him.
Mitch tossed down money for the check and tip when someone called to him. He turned around and saw Mildred Evans, his motherâs friend, coming toward him. Biting back a groan, he plastered a smile on his face as the older woman approached. He stood and greeted her.
âMrs Evans, itâs good to see you.â
She smiled. âGood to see you, Mitchell.â She looked down at the children. âOh, my, youâve all grown so much. This canât be Colby. Well, arenât you getting handsome? Just like your father.â Her attention moved to his daughter. âAnd this is little Greta,â she gushed. âSuch a young lady, and the image of your beautiful mother.â
âThank you, Mrs Evans,â Greta said.
âIâm only speaking the truth. We all miss Carrie so much.â The older woman finally glanced Rebeccaâs way. âAnd who is this?â
âMrs Evans, this is Rebecca Valentine. Sheâs from the Pierce Agency and is helping with my free-range beef project. Rebecca, this is Mrs Evans. Sheâs a friend of my parents.â
âNice to meet you, Mrs Evans,â Rebecca said.
The woman gave Rebecca the once-over, and Mitch knew that his mother in Florida would get a full report in the morning.
âItâs nice to meet you, Ms Valentine. Iâm sure you feel like a fish out of water in our small town.â
âItâs a nice change of pace. And Iâve enjoyed staying at the Tucker ranch.â
Mitch could see the older womanâs mind clicking away. âItâs so nice that Mitch opened his home to you.â
He needed to end this, before the kids fed her any information. âWell, we should get going if we want to watch a movie before bedtime. Itâs been nice to see you, Mrs Evans.â
Mitch quickly gathered the kids and Rebecca, and they were out the door and in the car without any further incident. All the way home, Rebecca was silent, probably because of what Mildred had said.
As promised, they watched a movie in the family room. Mitch wasnât sure which Disney movie it was, because he couldnât stop watching Rebecca. Ever since Mrs Evansâ appearance tonight, she had pulled away from them, into what seemed like her own little world.
When the movie ended, Colby had fallen asleep. When Mitch scooped him up, his son protested and said he wanted Rebecca to go, too.
Rebecca agreed and followed the group upstairs. Mitch carried Colby to his room, stripped him down and put on his pajamas. Rebecca came in, but stood back.
She felt out of place. Sheâd never put a child to bed before. Not that she hadnât wanted to; sheâd just never had the chance.
