Fifteen—Robyn

“Left or right?” I asked.

“Right at the light, then left on the side street.”

“What did you say the name of this place was again?”

“The Badger’s Paws. You’ll like it, I promise.”

I shrugged, but spun the wheel the way Callie directed. According to her, the trivia night at this place was the most fun thing that happened in South Thornton on a weekly basis. The bar had only opened after I left town. When I lived here, there were definitely no trivia nights around.

“Okay,” I said, pulling the car into a parking spot. “You sure you don’t want to just go back to your place?”

“Don’t tempt me,” Callie said.

Ever since we’d started fooling around, it was hard to keep our hands off each other. I still couldn’t believe how amazing in bed she was, considering her lack of experience with women. She seemed to enjoy what I did to her, too. She’d definitely been in the closet without realizing it.

But we could only spend so long in bed before both of us wanted to do something else. And in honesty, part of me wanted to get her out of her apartment so I’d be sure this wasn’t just about sex.

That wasn’t to say this was an official date. We’d labeled one dinner as such, but we hadn’t talked any more about the status of our relationship. It was still possible that she saw this as a fuck buddies’ night out.

Callie gave my hand a squeeze, then dropped it. “Let’s go in.”

Inside the dimly lit bar, teams of people were already forming. I went to the bar to get each of us a beer, and Callie waved at the people she usually played with. When I got to her side, she introduced me. “This is my friend Robyn.”

Friend. I tried not to grimace. If she wanted to label me as that, I wasn’t going to push her for anything more... yet.

I was used to dating out and proud women, like my ex. We never shied away from public displays of affection, even when we were just starting to date. Callie was different. I trusted we’d get where we were supposed to be eventually… right?

Taking a sip of my beer, I shook everyone’s hand. I took a seat a few inches away from Callie, making sure not to do anything that would betray me as more than a friend.

Maybe we should talk about how we were going to approach this, but she’d seemed so calm about kissing in public. I hadn’t realized it was going to be an issue when we were with her friends. Hadn’t realized how much it would hurt to have her not acknowledge who I was to her.

Her friends were nice enough, and they made small talk about people they knew as the emcee started to set up. I stayed quiet, smiling and nodding despite how I didn’t know anyone they were talking about.

Finally the preparations were done, and the emcee took hold of the mic. With some relief, I watched as he explained the rules.
